The popular stage adaptation of Aladdin will soon be finalizing its run at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End to make way for another Disney classic. Mary Poppins is making its return to the West End in autumn of 2019, and fans are thrilled to hear the news. The award-winning musical enjoyed a 3-year run at the Prince Edward Theatre before closing in 2008, but not without impressing a wide range of fans. Now it will start a new one at the theatre where it debuted in all its glory.
The stage production is based on the musical 1964 film of the same name, following the story very closely. Zizi Strallen, who has played the role in London, New York, and Sydney, will return to the lead as Mary Poppins, and Charlie Stemp will act beside her as loveable chimney sweep Bert. Stemp is best known for playing the lead of Arthur Kipps in the West End musical Half a Sixpence. The duo should make for an entertaining performance, and fans everywhere are looking forward to seeing them act together.
Cameron Mackintosh returns as director, hoping to recapture the magic of the original opening of Mary Poppins. Although it was beloved in its original West End run, the production has since gained international acclaim and brings with it higher expectations and more fanfare. It can be seen at the Prince Edward Theatre starting in Autumn of 2019, with more details to be released as the date draws nearer.
