The long-running West End classic Les Misérables will be moving theatres to allow for a much-needed renovation of the famous Queen’s Theatre. Producer Cameron Mackintosh has no plans of letting the longest-running musical of all time end its impressive run and has announced that there are plans to move it to a new theatre before the renovations begin. The move is still in the works, and the new venue will be announced in later this year.
The Victoria Palace Theatre was recently renovated, and the Queen’s Theatre is following suit along with other classic venues such as the Noel Coward Theatre, the Gielgud Theatre, the Novello Theatre, and Wyndham’s Theatre. With so many historic buildings and long-running shows, these venues must be brought up to date so that they can continue to provide a quality experience for all of their patrons and fans.
The Queen’s Theatre, in particular, is in pressing need of a backstage upgrade as well as restoration of the boxes and loges. The renovations promise to make the theatre more comfortable and accessible for everyone, from actors to ticketholders. Recent inspections revealed that renovations are much needed, and they will take place at the Queen’s Theatre from 2019 to 2020. Les Miz will run there in the meantime, but once a new theatre is announced they will start the process of preparing the new theatre and cast and crew for the move. It may feel a bit different, but it won’t stop the miraculous run that the musical has achieved.
