Come From Away tells the story of the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. This Canadian community made headlines on September 11th, 2001, when it took in 38 diverted planes from around the world after the infamous attack on New York’s Twin Towers. In a time of international crisis, Gander opened its airstrip and allowed thousands of panicking passengers to seek safety among its establishments and citizens.

The play is a wonderful look at the humanity that can be found within us all, and it does an excellent job of showing the diversity and compassion among characters who did not know each other and likely would never see each other again. Irene Sankoff and David Hein wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the production after visiting the town of Gander on the 10th anniversary of September 11th. What came out of these was a beautiful and empathetic production that has been touching audience members since its debut on Broadway.
